The event will feature a tribute to Phife Dawg, who passed away earlier this year due to complications from diabetes.
A Tribe Called Quest burst onto the scene in 1990 with its debut album People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. Since then, the group, made up of Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White, has become an icon in rap.
"A Tribe Called Quest broke musical boundaries no one knew existed and reached a level of success that only very rare talents accomplish,” ASCAP President Paul Williams said in a press release. “We are very proud to present this extremely talented and innovative group with the ASCAP Golden Note Award.”
Past recipients of the award, which is given to artists who have achieved extraordinary career milestones, include Dr. Dre, Jay Z, Puff Daddy, Lauryn Hill and LL Cool J.
At the event, ASCAP will also recognize the songwriters and publishers of the most-performed rap, R&B and Gospel songs of 2015.
