Hip Hop Album Sales: Trey Songz, Iggy Azalea, Pharrell, Eminem, 50 Cent
Album sales figures are in for the week of 07/13/2014. Trey Songz tops the Hip Hop/R&B list with "Trigga."
This week, Trey Songz continues his chart-topping success with the top album in Rap/R&B. Songz's Trigga is followed by Iggy Azalea's The New Classic and Michael Jackson's Xscape on this week's Billboard Top 200 albums chart.
Trey Songz's Trigga Hits At #5
Trey Songz's Trigga dropped from #1 to #5 this week, experiencing a 67 percent drop in sales. The album went from 104,713 copies sold in its first week of availability to 34,108 units sold this week. Overall, the album has sold 297,353. The album also earned a 4 out 5 X rating on HipHopDX. "As the soundtrack for when the turn up eventually involves turning down the sheets, Trey Songz has been one of the last decade’s most dependable hit record-making artists," HipHopDX says in its review. "In hearkening back to his roots, he showcases his desire to not slow down for 10 more years. Wild, yet well-delivered songs showcase Songz as a master of a now lyrically unrestrained mainstream R&B standard."
Iggy Azalea's The New Classic Remains In Top 20
Iggy Azalea's The New Classic continues its success in the chart's Top 20. The rapper sold 12,820 units of her album, a 9 percent dip from last week's 14,029 copies sold. Overall, Azalea's Classic has sold 233,103 units in 12 weeks of availability. In June, Azalea announced that she would release a new version of The New Classic. The New Classic earned a 2 and a half out of 5 X rating on HipHopDX when it was released. "The New Classic is a musical throne upon which the new blonde princess of Pop can rest her ample posterior," HipHopDX says in its review. "As Rap and Pop synergize again—yet this time without significantly embarrassing results—it opens the gate for Iggy Azalea to have an opportunity to shine. Sometimes, when Pop marketing and urban music perfectly commingle, we get Michael Jackson’s Thriller. In other cases, Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic aims high, but ultimately falls flat."
Michael Jackson's Xscape Keeps Its Slot In Top 20
Now in the album's ninth week of availability, Michael Jackson continues his Top 20 chart success with Xscape. The album sold 12,619 units this week, a four percent decrease in sales from last week's 13,083 copies sold last week. Overall, Xscape has sold 364,656 units. In June,Forbes reported on the success Michael Jackson's work has had since the singer's passing. "Add up the earnings of Jay Z, Taylor Swift and Kanye West since 2009, and the total is $544 million," Forbes said at the time. "It’s an astounding sum, but Michael Jackson has earned more than all three—combined—since his death five years ago." Xscape only helps that figure grow.
